KALEVALA son una formación rusa de Folk Metal, que llevan en esto mas o menos desde el 2007. Entre sus filas cuentan con miembros que han pertenecido a la formación también rusa, NEVID. Nikita Andriyanov y Ksneia, son los principales cerebros que hay detrás de la banda. Con su álbum debut "Tow of Snow-White Flax", sentaron las bases de lo que estaba por venir. Con su segunda obra "The Cuckoo's Children", no han hecho mas que reafirmar que su propuesta tiene mucho que ofrecer y en el transcurso de este año, aparecerá "The Witch", su próximo álbum, con el cual podrían dar el salto. Hemos sometido a un interrogatorio a la banda, abarcando distintas cuestiones, y sin más dilación, vamos a ver lo que nos contaron. Hola, ¿que tal?, un saludo desde
España. Si no estoy equivocado, KALEVALA se formó en el año 2007 por
Nikita Andriyanov (LETHAL GUEST, NEVID) y Ksenia (NEVID, BUTTERFLY
TEMPLE), ¿por qué decidís crear KALEVALA? Vuestro estilo se podría definir como
Folk Metal, pero ¿qué % sería Folk y qué % sería Metal?, te comento
esto por que supongo que en KALEVALA es igual de importante el Folk y el
Metal, ¿por qué decidís tocar este estilo? Vuestras letras tratan sobre el
Paganismo y la Mitología, ¿os consideráis paganos?, ¿vivís como
paganos?, ¿afrontáis la vida como tal?, ¿qué significa para vosotros el
paganismo? Después de vuestra primera demo,
participáis en el DVD “Live in Moscow” junto a bandas como MANEGARM y
ALKONOST, ¿cómo surgió la oportunidad de participar en este DVD?, ¿qué
nos podéis contar sobre este?, y ¿sobre estas bandas?
Hablemos sobre vuestro álbum debut
“Tow of Snow-White Flax”, ¿en qué os habéis basado para crear este
álbum?, explícanos el concepto lírico de este, por favor. Hablemos sobre vuestro último álbum
“The Cuckoo's Children”. Veo este álbum como un trabajo más pensado y
elaborado, como un paso más que “Tow of Snow-White Flax”, ¿estarías de
acuerdo con esto?, ¿por qué? ”Cuckoo's Children” fue grabado en
los CDM studio. Este fue mezclado, masterizado y grabado por Sergey
“Lazar” (ARKONA, ROSSOMAHAR), ¿qué opinión tienes sobre el trabajo que
realizó Sergey en este álbum? Estáis trabajando en el próximo álbum
de la banda titulado “The Wich”, ¿cuándo estará disponible?, ¿qué nos
puedes explicar sobre este?, ¿seguirá el camino de los anteriores
álbumes?. Cuéntanos algo sobre el nuevo álbum, por favor. En vuestro Myspace hay una canción

English & Russian version : 1.Hello, how are you?, a greeting from Spain. If I am not mistaken, KALEVALA was formed in 2007 by Nikita Andriyan (LETHAL GUEST, NEVID) and Kseniya (NEVID, BUTTERFLY TEMPLE), why do you decide to create KALEVALA? Explain to us a bit this, please. Никита: Привет, это случилось после ухода Ксении из группы Невидь, я ещё некоторое время оставался там, но мне на тот момент уже не нравилась блэк/дэтовая направленность этого коллектива, я хотел играть музыку ближе к фолк металу. После ухода Ксении решение о создание нашей совместной группы пришло само собой, так мы и в Невиди писали вместе песни, и продолжили это делать дальше в Калевале. Nikita: Hello, it happened after Ksenya’s leaving “Nevid”. I’d been playing with them for some time, but I didn’t like the way of the music at that momet, as I wanted to play music closer to folk metal but not black/death metal. After Ksenya’s leaving,, it goes without saying we decided to create a joint group .We were writing songs for Nevid together and continued to do this in Kalevala. 2.Your style might be defined as Folk Metal, but, what % would be Folk and what % would be A Metal?, I comment to you on this, why I suppose that in KALEVALA it is equal of importantly the Folk and the Metal, why you decides to play this style? Никита: Я думаю каждый сам для себя решит насколько % мы «метал», и насколько % «фолк», это дело критиков и музыкальных изданий. При создании очередной композиции мы заранее не задаёмся целью сделать её как можно тяжелей или , наоборот, добавить больше мелодики и меньше тяжести. Всё это происходит само собой во время репетиций, мы делаем так ,как подсказывает нам сердце, а не рекорд лейблы. На то что мы выбрали такой стиль повлияло многое – начнём с того ,что нам просто всем нравится этот стиль, его металлический напор и энергия и в то же время берущие за душу фольклорные мелодии. Играя в Невиди мы с Ксенией писали песни и близкие именно к фолк металу, а не к более брутальному паган/викингу, поэтому у нас не было сомнений в каком ключе нам продолжать играть в Калевале. Nikita: I think let everybody decides for themselves what % of Folk, and what % of Metal – it’s work for critics and music editions. While we are making a new song, we don’t make up our minds to make it more heavy or on the contrary to make it more melodious. needless to say that it strikes us while we are jamming, we do what our hearts direct, not record label. A lot of things influenced on choosing this genre. First of all – everybody likes this genre, it’s energy and pressure of metal and on the other side folk melodies which touch heart.. Having played in Nevid, Ksenya and I wrote songs closer to folk –metal, so we had no doubts of Kalevala’s genre. 3.Your lyrics treat on the Paganism and the Mythology, do you consider yourselves to be pagans?, do you live as pagans?, do you confront the life as pagans?, what does mean for you the paganism? Кс. Язычество для русского человека - это как биг мак для американца. Это вкус детства ). Мы все воспитаны на мистических народных сказках, и кстати, если внимательно вчитаться в детскую лирику А.С. Пушкина -то там можно найти такую психоделику, которая вполне составит конкуренцию мескалитным странствиям Кастанеды )))). Мы до сих пор свято верим, что в лесу живет Леший, и , войдя в лес, кланяемся ему, мы пугаем непослушных детей Бабой-Ягой, и дети тут же притихают. Мы разговариваем с реками и танцуем танцы дикого ветра . Мы -язычники от рождения Kseniya: Paganism for Russian people is like BigMac for Americans. The taste of childhood. We all brought up on mystical folk tales, and by the way, If you read very attentively Pushkin’s children's lyric poetry , you can find there a psychedelic, which can compete with mescalin’s wanderings of Castaneda))). We are still sacredly believing that wood Goblins live in the forest and when we come into the forest we worship him, we intimidate naughty children with Baba-Yaga(witch in Russian folk tales), and the children grow down immediately. We talk with Rivers and dancing with wild Wind . We are pagans from birth. 4. After your first demo, you take part in the DVD " Live in Moscow " with the bands since MANEGARM and ALKONOST, how there arose the opportunity to take part in this DVD?, what can you tell us on this DVD?, and on these bands? Никита :Группы Manegarm И Алконост довольно известные в своём жанре, нам было очень приятно играть с ними на одной сцене, да и с Алконостами мы вообще очень хорошо дружим, с тех уже не один раз выступали вместе, и приглашали друг друга на записи. Возможность участия в DVD нам предложил организатор этого концерта и он же и издатель этого DVD музыкант по имени Койот. Nikita: Manegarm and Alkonost are famous enough in their genre, it was pretty pleasantly to stay with them on one stage , and we are good friends with Alkonost and many times play with them together and invite each other for recording. . The organizer of the concert and he is also a publisher of the DVD musician whose name is Coyote gave us an opportunity of participating on the DVD. 5. Do not be, if I am mistaken, but, your album debut " Tow of Snow-White Flax ", does it treat on Snow-White?, on what does it treat this album? Кс. Кудель - это очень личный альбом. Кудель белоснежного льна -это символ нового рождения, символ новой жизни. Вполне земной и осязаемой, с надеждой, разочарованиями, трагедиями, потерями и - снова с надеждой. Это как годовое коло - зиму сменяет весна, за весной лето, потом -осень и снова зима....и так -вечно. Так и мы идём по жизни - падаем, поднимаемся, Живем, постигаем, преодолеваем испытания и снова -идём. в этом и есть основной концепт Кудели. И я точно знаю , что лён белоснежным бывает (!!) -но только в наших мечтах )))))) Kseniya: Tow - this is a very private album. Tow of snow-white flax is a symbol of new birth, a symbol of new life. It is mundane and visible, with hope, disappointment, tragedy, loss and - again with hope. It's like the annual kolo ( kolo - is an old name of the word ‘circle’ ) - winter followes by spring, spring by summer then by autumn and then by winter again .... forever and all the time. So we go through the life - fall, rise, live, understand, overcome trials and again -go. This is the basic concept of Tow. And I do know that flax is a snow-white (!), But only in our dreams ))))))
6. Let's speak on your last album " The Cuckoo's Children ". I see this album as a more mature and elaborated work that " Tow of Snow-White Flax ", do you agree with this conclusion?, why? Кс. Ну, по-моему, это вполне естесственно, что каждая последующая работа несколько превосходит предыдущую. По крайней мере, в техническом исполнении. Тут играет роль всё -и наш накопленный опыт, и количество времени, потраченное на работу над альбомом, и бюджет ))))))) Надеюсь, что следующий альбом - "Ведьма" -станет еще более насыщенным и навороченным, нежели два предыдущих). Kseniya :Well, to my mind, this is quite natural that every next album is a bit more successiful than the previous one. At least in technical way. Everything takes part here - our experience, and the the time spent working on the album, and the budget ))))))) I hope that the next album - "The Witch", will more intense and featured than the previous two) . 7.?Cuckoo's Children? is recorded on CDM studio, an record, mixed&mastering by Sergey ?Lazar? (ARKONA, ROSSOMAHAR), What opinion have you on the work that Sergey realized in this album? Никита :Конечно же мы очень высокого мнения о проделанной Сергеем работе, к слову говоря мы работаем с ним не первый раз, и первый альбом сводил тоже он. Думаю мы ещё не раз с ним посотрудничаем. Nikita: Of course we think highly of the work done by Sergey , by the way we are working with him not for the first time, and our first album has mixed by him , too. I think our cooperation is not for the last time. 8.You are employed at the next album of the band titled "The Wich", when will it be available?, what can you explain to us on this one?, will it continue the way of the previous albums?. Tell us something on the new album, please. Кс. "Ведьма" выйдет этой осенью. Альбом будет состоять в равной степени из "боевиков" и медляков )))) В плане музыкальном - по моему мнению, этот релиз более спокойный.... более мелодичный, чтоли.... Основная тема альбома -возвращение домой. Ведь дом, это не только место где мы живем.... это и Родной край, и жизнь после смерти, и утроба матери.... Возвращение к корням - вот основная тема релиза. В ней не грусти, нет житейских проблем, а есть только тема пути. Вообще, Ведьма - в правильном понимании этого русского слова -"ведующая мать". То есть, мудрость во плоти. Вселенская мудрость в образе женщины. А еще есть у слова ведьма и другое значение. Это просто -мать. В древнерусской традиции девочка, юная девушка есть - веста, потом она взрослеет, становится НЕвестой, а потом, когда она выходит замуж и рожает детей -она превращается в Ведьму )))))) то есть, ведьма -"постигшая жизнь". Так что понятие ВЕДЬМА -тоже есть часть мистического круговорота природы. В котором отправная и конечная точки есть -ДОМ. Kseniya: " The Witch" will be released this fall. The album will be composed equally of "thrillers" and slow songs)))) And in music way –to my mind , this release is more peaceful .... more melodic, may be .... The main theme of the album, home-coming. After all, home is not only a place where we live .... this is native land, and life after death, and the womb .... Back to the roots - that's the main theme of this release. There is no sadness, everyday problems, but there is only an issue of road. By the way , the Witch – I mean the correct meaning of this Russian word - is “ a wise mother.(“vedma” – ‘ved’- ‘veduushaya’-wise, “ma”-“mama"- mother) That is the wisdom in the flesh. The world Wisdom as a woman. And the word “witch” has another meaning. It's just a mother. In ancient Russian tradition, a girl, a young girl is a vesta(ancient pagan girl who is not married) , then she grows up, becomes a bride, and then, when she gets married and gives birth to children, she turns into a witch )))))) so, a witch is a woman who learned the life. So the idea of “The witch”,is part of mystical cycle of nature. In which starting and ending points are the one-it is HOUSE.
9.In your Myspace there is a new song, "Tausen-rada". This is recording and mixing by Nikita Andriyanov, does this mean that the next album will be recording and mixing by Nikita?, it means this that already will not work with you Sergey "Lazar" in the new album? Никита : Я пока не готов к сведению полноценного альбома, поэтому лучше мы доверим это дело профессионалам ) Nikita: I am not ready to mix the full album yet, so do we entrust this to the professionals) 10. How is it KALEVALA's show?, which is the most memorable show that you have realized?, what plans of direct have you for the future? Кс. Концерт Калевалы -это абсолютно русский угар ))))))) со "рвущим меха" аккордеонистом, угарным бас гитаристом, похожим на свирепого Тараса Бульбу )). Моё общение с залом напоминает беседу свояков на шумном застолье )))) Объявляя песни, я говорю с людьми о жизни, рассказываю про себя, спрашиваю про них, и каждый раз это экспромт. Нам удается создать и домашнюю атмосферу, и фольк-метал угар одновременно.. Kalevala’s perfomances are absolutely Russian awesome))))))) with "rending of the bellows " accordion player, trash bass guitar player like a savage Taras Bulba)). My consort with the audience recalls a conversation of brothers-in-law at feast)))) announcing the song, I talk to people about life, tell about myself, I ask about them, and every time it is impromptu. We can create both homely atmosphere and folk -metal crash! May be the most memorable perfomance for me is our appearance in Vyborg, on the summer folk festival. The medieval town, with a wonderful castle and in one museums I’ve tried on a chain mail and a helmet ))))))) The perfomance was held in the ancient park Mon Repou - and this combination of medieval atmosphere and the crashing rok’n’roll – very cool )))))) and there was a full bus of our fans having arrived with us – it was awesome!)))))))) 11.Speak to us on the TURGENEVFEST, please. Кс. Ой, о Тургеневфесте говорить пока рано..... вот когда отыграем -тогда и расскажем....... Никита: Это фолк фестиваль в формате open air будет происходить во дворе Тургеневской библиотеке в центр Москвы в честь великого русского писателя,. На этом фестивале мы являемся хэдлайнерами наряду с группой Тролль Гнёт Ель Kc. Oh,it’s too early to speak about it....... we won’t tell about it till we peform… Nikita: this open air folk festival in honor of the great Russian writer will take place in the courtyard of the Turgenev Library in the centre of Moscow. Troll Gnet El and we are the headliners …
12.You took part in the song "Maslnitsa" of ARKONA DVD "Noch Velesova", make clear to us a bit this, how does arisethis collaboration? Кс. Ну, если говорить о том, что мы все -давние друзья и знаем друг друга сто тысяч лет -то сыграть вместе песню -абсолютно естесственное явление.... Мы с Машей пили водку вместе еще задолго до становления "Арконы" и , уж тем более, "Калевалы" ))) Такая вот история ))))) Kseniya: Well, we are all old friends and have been knowing each other for ages so , it’s everyday occurrence to play song together.... Masha and I had been drinking vodka together long before the Arkona’s set up and all the more, "Kalevala"))) that’s all)))))
13.Let's speak a bit about the scene Russian. I you am going to mention a few bands, and you comment to me that it looks like to you his work. How do you believe that Russian scene nowadays?
You see , to estimate music of people with whom at the least we are friends, I don’t want ))))))) And anyway, I think it should do the audience, not I..... Let's go, I'll tell you how much we vodka drank toghether))))))))))))))))))))
Kseniya: BUTTERFLY TEMPLE: so, With BT I've been taken acquaintance since the early 90s ..... 8 years we played together))) I ‘ve recorded three albums with them. We have been drinking vodka together.... ))) At that time it was a cult band in Russia, one of the best bands, I think. Today - they are still persisting and may the Gods help them. ROSSOMAHAR: With Lazar’s works and Rossomahar I've been taken acquaintance since the late 90s, if I’m not mistaken .... Excellent band, we often play together and drink vodka with pleasure on meeting)))))) for a total success! ).
ARKONA: Masha is unique person. She has passed very difficult and varied way . When Russians drank vodka, they often ask each other - "Do you respect me?" . So ,we are dirnking vodka for mutual respect for more than ten years))))) I like and respect Arkona - and I wish them to conquer the whole world) ).
NEVID: our guitarist and I have been playing here for three years. and we’ve recorded two good albums. today, We don’t play with them because we don’t drink vodka with them.. don’t drink and know nothing about them )))).
NOMANS LAND: wonderful guys from St. Petersburg!. once , I’ve entertained soup to them – since that we are friends ))))))we haven’t seen for ages!.
14. Do you want to add some thing more to this interview? Кс. Хочу пожелать всем - хорошего рокинрола, а так же - поближе познакомиться с русской культурой ))). Ведь Россия -это не только медведи, матрешки , икра и Горбачев..... в первую очередь Россия -это мистика. "Умом Россию не понять" -так сказал классик. И был прав. Приезжайте к нам, и пусть вас не пугает то что "у России две беды -дураки и дороги" - главное, что вы найдете здесь -это русскую Душу - широкую и бездонную , как матушка-Волга. Ну, а дома -слушайте нашу музыку - музыку Калевалы - и ..... - не судите строго !!! )))))))
I want to wish everybody good rok’n’roll and get acquainted closer with Russian culture))). After all, Russia is not only bears, matreshka, caviar and Gorbachev ..... first of all Russia is a mystic. “Russia cannot be understood with the mind alone, "- said classic poet. And he was right. Come to our place, and don’t be afraid of the fact that "Russia has two trouble- fools and roads" - the main thing that you'll find here is Russian soul - wide and bottomless as Mother Volga.
